School is right around the corner, or (for some of us) it has already started. In either case, resolve to make this school year smile-friendly for your child through:
- Regular Dental Checkups
- Healthy Dental Care Habits
- Healthy Snacks and Lunches
Below, our family dentist in Troy shares a little advice.
#1 Schedule Your Family’s Checkups Before School Starts
It’s not too late to schedule a comprehensive checkup and teeth cleaning before the school year starts or shortly after class is in session. By seeing the dentist now, you can ensure your child starts the year with a healthy and comfortable smile. We can also update dental sealants to help protect their teeth.
Remember, tooth decay can be painful and distracting for anyone, especially kids. Learning demands focus.
#2 Reinforce Healthy Dental Habits
Encourage your child to make healthy dental choices this school year.
Ideally, your child should:
- Brush at least twice daily.
- Floss at least twice a day (when age-appropriate).
- Avoid sugary and acidic foods and drinks most of the time.
- Wear the mouthguard when playing sports.
It’s best to lead by example!
#3 Pack Smart Snacks and Lunches for Healthy Teeth
Health snacks and lunches may include:
- Veggie packs
- Strawberries
- Nuts
- Low-fat Yogurt
- Lean proteins
Additionally, water is a healthier alternative to soda or juice. Proper hydration, ideally with water, is a key to maintaining your oral and overall health.
#4 Brushing and Flossing on the Go
You can pack a travel-sized oral hygiene kit in your child's backpack so that they can clean their teeth after lunch or snack time. Consider a small toothbrush, travel-sized toothpaste, and rinse.
If there isn't enough time to clean the teeth between classes, emphasize the importance of water again. Water helps hydrate the mouth and rinses debris away from the enamel.
